Octisalate

Octisalate is 奥克托律 (ào kè tuō lǜ) in Chinese; its formal INCI Chinese name is 水杨酸乙基己酯 (shuǐ yáng suān yǐ jī jǐ zhǐ), written 奧克托律 / 水楊酸乙基己酯 in Traditional Chinese (Taiwan). It's a UVB chemical filter and solvent found in most US sunscreens.

The formal INCI Chinese name is 水杨酸乙基己酯 (also seen as 水杨酸辛酯); trade names are Octisalate and Octyl Salicylate. China's NMPA has approved it — it's listed in the Safety and Technical Standards for Cosmetics sunscreen catalog with a 5% concentration cap.

It pulls double duty: it adds UVB protection and works as a solvent, dissolving hard-to-solubilize filters like avobenzone and octocrylene into the formula. Without it, light-feeling high-SPF US sunscreens are hard to build — hence the Neutrogena/Coppertone/Banana Boat staple trio of Octisalate + Homosalate + Avobenzone.

Current FDA rules list it as safe to use, and the EU's SCCS assessment agrees. But FDA's 2019/2020 absorption studies found it in blood after a single application, far above the 0.5 ng/mL "needs further evaluation" threshold. Most conservative move in pregnancy: mineral filters (zinc oxide + titanium dioxide) or European Tinosorb filters.

The 2018–2021 bans in Hawaii, Palau, and the Virgin Islands target oxybenzone and octinoxate — octisalate isn't explicitly banned. But the reef impact of salicylates is still being studied, so for snorkeling or diving pick a purely mineral sunscreen (non-nano zinc oxide/titanium dioxide only).

Yes — NMPA approves it as a UV filter at up to 5%. That said, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean brands lean toward newer filters like Tinosorb S/M and Uvinul T 150, so octisalate shows up noticeably less often on domestic ingredient lists than in US formulas.
