Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is 荷荷巴油 (hé hé bā yóu) in Chinese — 荷荷芭油 in Taiwan, and sometimes 霍霍巴油 on mainland labels. It's a sebum-like liquid wax ester used as a lightweight moisturizer that suits every skin type, including oily and acne-prone.

It's pronounced 'ho-HO-ba,' not 'jo-jo-ba'; the INCI name is Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil. Despite the species name chinensis, jojoba is native to the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, California, and Mexico — the name traces to an 18th-century botanist's error, not to China.

Correct — chemically it's a liquid wax ester, not a triglyceride. That makes it unique: its structure nearly matches the wax-ester part of human sebum, it far outlasts other plant oils (2-5 years at room temperature), and skin doesn't flag it as a foreign, pore-clogging oil. Hence oil control plus moisture at once.

Yes — it's among the most recommended pregnancy skincare oils: gentle, no hormonal activity, low allergy rates, and commonly used against stretch marks and tight, itchy skin. Pregnancy lines like Mama Mio, Burt's Bees Mama, and Earth Mama all include it.

Depends on use. Coconut oil is highly comedogenic (4/5) and tends to clog facial pores — better for body and hair; jojoba (2/5) suits the face and every skin type, and stays liquid where coconut solidifies. Coconut is much cheaper and cleanses better. Verdict: jojoba for the face, coconut for body, hair, and makeup removal.
